Fabulous Fit Retreat

October 24-28, 2006

Especially For Fashion Sewing Enthusiasts

In a mountainous retreat setting, spend personalized time with fit and alteration expert Judith Rasband and her team, as they gently guide you through the process of figure evaluation, fashion pattern style selection for your figure, pattern alteration by the innovative new seam method, and trial garment analysis and adjustment. Trial garments will go beyond ordinary to include 5-8 Easy Pieces in coordinated fabrics: 3-5 tops and 2-3 bottoms—tank, shell, campshirt, sportshirt, duster, straight skirt, flared skirt, and pull-on pants.

Her own best visual aid, Judi teaches you how to break through the "looking glass self" and improve self image and self esteem. You'll get a revealing look at figure variations and discover the key to figuring out your own figure type—or combination of types. You'll discover the relationship between figure and fit, measure your figure with the 2 Easy Measuring Tape™ and use fitting ease and fashion ease to your advantage.

Clothing patterns come in standard sizes. People don't. People come with figure variations from the standard size. And figure variations come in combinations. You'll see accurate and effective, state-of-the-art, alterations for typical fitting problems such as:

  • prominent bust in combination with overly erect back (long front with short back)
  • rounded upper back with narrow and shallow chest (long back with short front),
  • high hip curve with flat behind and prominent tummy
  • large and low behind with large side thighs
  • large bust in combination with a narrow or broad back
  • short midriff with prominent tummy

Find out how to alter for a long or short lower torso in combination with a long or short pant crotch curve–and much more.

You'll get hands-on practice in half scale, altering patterns for typical combinations, then for your own combined alterations. You'll carry out those alterations on your full-scale fashion patterns. Sew up a storm, then analyze grainline and wrinkles as clues to poor fit and adjust as needed. Customized shoulder pad design included. (Basic construction skills required for registration.)

Plan to bring basic sewing equipment, sewing machine, paper-cutting scissors, magic tape, and ruler. Practice patterns provided. If available, bring a garment you own that doesn't fit well. Bring fabric in a solid color for tank top, shell, and pants in your general size. (Solid colored fabric for sportshirt, straight skirt, and duster is optional, depending on your number of figure variations, experience, and sewing speed.) Bring coordinated print fabric for camp shirt and four-gore flared skirt in your general size. Ideally, chose fabrics that include your hair and/or your eye color so you will harmonize easily with the completed cluster of clothes. Specific fashion patterns will be announced upon registration.
